For more than twenty years, my working life was built around print sales—a fast‑paced world of client relationships, tight deadlines, and helping businesses turn ideas into something beautifully tangible. I loved the craft of print: the textures, the finishes, the satisfaction of creating something physical in an increasingly digital world.

But after two decades, I felt a pull toward something more hands‑on, more grounded, and closer to the materials that have always inspired me. That pull led me into property services, where I discovered a new passion: working with my hands, problem-solving, and improving the spaces people live in.

What began as small jobs soon evolved into creating custom cabinetry, interior storage solutions, and eventually full sets of handmade doors. The more I worked with natural materials—especially wood—the more I realised how deeply satisfying it was to shape something functional, beautiful, and lasting.

And that was the spark that eventually became Element & Oak.

From Cabinetry to Cutting Boards: A Natural Transition

Crafting cabinets and doors taught me precision, patience, and the importance of material choice. The offcuts, hardwoods, and beautifully grained pieces I handled daily hinted at another possibility. Instead of letting those pieces go to waste, I began turning them into one‑of‑a‑kind cutting and serving boards.

At first, these were personal experiments—boards made for my own kitchen, gifts for family, then commissions from friends. Over time, I realised something important:

People want everyday objects that feel intentional, sustainable, and crafted with care—not factory‑made pieces destined for landfill.

My experience in carpentry and finishing naturally lent itself to the smaller scale, finer detail, and elevated craftsmanship required for premium kitchenware. Creating cutting boards felt like a perfect blend of everything I’d learned: design, joinery, shaping, finishing, and even that original print-world passion for texture, feel, and presentation.

A Love of Cooking and the Search for Better Tools

Like many people, my kitchen is my happy place. Cooking is how I unwind, how I connect with people, and how I express creativity. Over time, I started to notice how many utensils and boards were made of materials that simply didn’t sit right with me—microplastics, polypropylene, resins, and composites that degrade, flake, or end up polluting soil and water systems.

I wanted tools that felt good, performed beautifully, and caused no harm.

Wood—especially responsibly sourced hardwood—has natural antibacterial properties, lasts for years, and only becomes more beautiful with use. The more I cooked, the more I appreciated the weight, feel, and personality of a well‑crafted board. And soon I realised:

The board you prepare food on matters just as much as the ingredients themselves.

This philosophy sits at the heart of Element & Oak.

Sustainability, Craft, and Materials That Matter

Every Element & Oak board is made from carefully selected hardwoods chosen for their:

  • Sustainability and provenance
  • Durability and grain structure
  • Ability to last a lifetime with proper care
  • Biodegradability and low environmental impact

Wherever possible, I use offcuts, reclaimed timber, and carefully sourced local hardwoods. The finishes are food‑safe, microplastic‑free, and environmentally considerate, because what goes onto your board eventually goes into your food—and your body.

My goal is simple:
To make kitchenware that is functional, beautiful, and kind to the planet.

Element & Oak Today

Element & Oak represents the crossroads of my entire journey:

  • 20 years of print taught me presentation, detail, and the value of quality.
  • Property services and cabinetry taught me craft, precision, and respect for materials.
  • Cooking taught me what a truly great board should feel like.
  • Sustainability taught me why it matters.

Today, I handcraft each piece individually—shaping, sanding, oiling, and finishing every board myself. No two are ever the same, and each is built to last, not to be replaced.

This is more than a business.
It’s a craft.
A philosophy.
And a celebration of the materials that connect us back to nature.

Welcome to Element & Oak.
I’m glad you’re here.
