Element & Oak – Cutting Board Care Guide
Handcrafted from sustainable hardwood. Built to last a lifetime.
Thank you for choosing an Element & Oak board. Each piece is individually crafted from responsibly sourced hardwoods and finished with our food‑safe oil and wax blend. With the right care, your board will serve you beautifully for decades.
1. Daily Care
- Hand wash only. Use warm water, a soft sponge, and a mild dish soap.
- Never soak your board in water or leave it in a wet sink.
- Immediately dry with a clean towel after washing and stand upright to allow air to circulate on all sides.
2. What to Avoid
- No dishwasher. High heat and steam will warp and crack hardwood.
- No prolonged water exposure. This causes swelling, cupping, and glue-line failure.
- Avoid harsh chemicals or bleach. These damage the finish and wood fibres.
- Do not store flat on a damp surface. It restricts airflow and leads to warping.
- Avoid direct sunlight or heat sources (radiators, Aga tops, etc.).
3. Monthly Oiling (Recommended)
Your board is finished with a natural, food-safe oil and wax blend. Reapply oil to keep it hydrated and protected.
How to Oil Your Board
- Ensure the board is completely dry.
- Apply a generous layer of food‑safe mineral oil, cutting board oil, or Element & Oak Conditioning Oil.
- Rub the oil into all surfaces (front, back, edges) with a lint‑free cloth.
- Leave to absorb for 20–30 minutes.
- Wipe off any excess oil.
- For best results, finish with a thin layer of board wax.
How Often
- Heavy use: once every 2–4 weeks
- Moderate use: once per month
- Low use: every 6–8 weeks
If the board looks dry or pale, it’s time to oil.
4. After Heavy Use (Odours & Stains)
For natural cleaning after cutting strong-smelling foods like garlic or onion:
To Remove Smells
- Sprinkle coarse salt or baking soda.
- Rub with half a lemon.
- Rinse and dry immediately.
To Remove Light Stains
- Use baking soda paste (baking soda + a few drops of water).
- Scrub gently with a soft brush.
- Rinse and dry.
5. Keeping Your Board Smooth
If your board feels rough after washing (normal with hardwood):
- Sand lightly with 320–400 grit sandpaper in the direction of the grain.
- Wipe clean.
- Reapply oil.
This restores the smooth, silky Element & Oak finish.
6. Knife Marks & Normal Wear
All wooden boards will show knife marks over time—this is part of their character.
For a deeper refresh:
- Lightly sand with 240, then 320, then 400 grit.
- Wipe clean.
- Apply oil and/or wax.
Your board will look nearly new.
7. Long-Term Care Tips
- Use both sides to promote even wear and reduce warping.
- Store upright when possible.
- Keep away from extreme humidity or dryness.
- Refinish annually if you prefer a “like new” look.
8. Food Safety Notes
- Wooden boards are naturally antimicrobial.
- Regular washing and oiling ensure optimal hygiene.
- Avoid raw poultry juices soaking into the wood—clean promptly.
- Never use vegetable oils (olive, sunflower, etc.) as they can turn sticky or rancid.
9. Sustainability Promise
Your board is made from premium hardwoods sourced from responsible UK and European suppliers. Proper care extends its life, reduces waste, and maintains the beauty of natural materials.
